We run a children home located in Thogoto, Kikuyu division Kiambu district 22 kilometres from the city of Nairobi in Kenya.

Vision

As our name NURU AFRICA suggests (NURU is derived from Kiswahili language meaning light) we aspire to spread our tentacles on a continent wide scale.

Africa has been portrayed as paradoxically as a continent endowed with resources yet full of civil strife, unabated poverty and moral decadence.

Our vision is to have Africa as a continent with children and youth realizing their potentials in societies that reciprocate by giving them their due respect, rights and dignity.

This can only be achieved if people take it upon themselves as an obligation and join in a concerted effort to change positively the lives of disadvantaged children, youth and parents by empowering them to lead meaningful lives.

Mission

NURU Africa strives to achieve a lasting improvement in the quality of life of the vulnerable and disadvantaged youth through rehabilitation, education and training.

Parents who double as custodians of the children and youth can only fulfill this obligation by being empowered economically.

This will enable them to cater for their basic needs in future, increase their ability to participate in and develop their societies.

Goal

Our goal is to improve the living standards of the vulnerable groups in Africa.

Values

Our guiding principles or core values are:-

  • To uphold Christian values.
  • The respect and value for each child and youth that they ought and should deserve.
  • Where all children have hope and an opportunity for personal development.
  • Justice for all children and youth.
  • Networking and advocacy with individuals or organizations that share our vision.

HIV/AIDS pandemic continues to take a heavy toll on humankind, poverty is on the upsurge and the family institution seems to be crumbling down. these and other social vices intertwined predispose people in Africa in an intricate web of poverty and disillusionment.

As NURU AFRICA, we strive to make a positive impact to the community no matter how small the magnitude is.

Our target or the beneficiaries of our project are:

  •                  Abandoned and neglected children.
  •                  Exploited and sexually abused children.
  •                  HIV aids affected children and orphans.
  •                 Youth at risk both in school and out of school.

Children have special physical, medical and psychosocial needs which may not be adequately met by the communities in which they live in.  At NURU AFRICA, we have established a children home that targets such children. The home provides a family like setup for the children under our custodianship.

A board of directors who volunteer their time ,resources and talents together with the salaried staff members run the project. However, local and foreign volunteers are encouraged to participate in the project

Presently we host over 82 children in our home and sponsor 40 in other education institutions. Financial constraint has remained a major impediment towards attaining target of 200 children.

We cannot divorce the children from the family setup, the youth who are at risk of HIV aids and susceptible to numerous social vices are also beneficiaries of our project. Our youth programme gives much prominence on HIV aids awareness, environmental conservation, vocational training and education.

Parents or guardians are imparted with skills and training on how to initiate self sustaining income generating activities.

By addressing the plight of children, youth and parents or guardians, our overarching goal is to empower them through various community based programmes to improve on their livelihoods.

  1. The number of people needing our services is very high this against the backdrop of limited resources makes us serve a small number.
  2. Limited financial resources, we bank on the resources granted by well wishers who at times are not forthcoming.
  3. Human resource constraints, we are understaffed, our conditions of service and terms are unattractive making many to shy away from joining our team.
  4. We are in a dynamic world, conversely, there are emerging needs of the children and youth as an organization we have to realign ourselves to address the issues. This is a challenge especially when they are tied to financial obligations.
  5. Lack of community goodwill, it has been an uphill task to sensitize the local community on the importance of the project. If goodwill is lacking our progress pace becomes arrested hence we cannot achieve as per our projections.
  6. HIV/ Aids pandemic which is highly prevalent in our area of operation translates to more people needing our resources which are scanty.

We have successfully built a large dormitory to serve as the residence for the rehabilitated children.

We have constructed and expanded our  training centre to house the vocational training programme. we have also put up a fully fitted kitchen.

The number of students who have received our services (rehabilitation in our home ) since our inception is over 300,this is a positive step as they now are provided with all the basic needs and education.
